Promoting Deep Learning

Although in everyday conversation we may use a single word – learning – to describe it, there is a massive difference between having a tentative, superficial grasp of something and a deep, genuine understanding. The extreme ends of this spectrum are often referred to as Surface and Deep Learning and all too often in the past classrooms have been characterised by the former – children receiving, retaining and regurgitating information, doing it neatly and underlining the title with a ruler. Many have rejected this concept of learning as limited and limiting and there is currently considerable interest in how we can move children beyond simply knowing things to an increasingly sophisticated and deeper understanding.

This project seeks to address two key questions:

1. What does Deep Learning look like?

2. How do we promote it in the classroom?

Deep Learning Programmes

We are currently running Deep Learning Programmes throughout the UK. These may be based in a single school, a cluster of schools or organised through a Local Authority.

While the precise logistics of individual programmes may vary the fundamental approach-based upon Action Research and trying out new strategies and approaches in the classroom- remains the same and involves four broad stages:

  • Stage one - a launch event. Usually in the form of a workshop (numbers between 6 – 24) to stimulate discussion, outline the basic methodology, suggest tools and strategies for the classroom.
  • Stage two - an interim period during which teachers will collect information and try out some of the ideas suggested at the launch event.
  • Stage three - a follow-up event during which teachers will be able to share their findings.
  • Stage four - a period in which the participating teachers will disseminate their findings with the wider staff. This may involve an Inset day based around a keynote and workshops.

nb: No two programmes have been identical as all workshops/projects are customised to reflect the interests and needs of the teachers/schools involved. The above programme is no more than a rough guide.
